I just bought my third one yesterday and had a note to myself to buy another one next month so that I'd have it when the current one failed. Unfortunately I was one month under in my prediction. I predicted one year 10 months and it failed at one year nine months.
I run mine 24 hours a day every day in a pond that holds around 400-500 gallons.
A filter tip that works for me after years of experimentation and does not require a lot of maintenance: put about an inch of aquarium gravel in the bottom of a medium square pond plant basket. Place the pump inside the basket and then cover it with more gravel so the gravel is to the top of the basket.
